We have worked with our friends at The Gate, Arts Centre in Cardiff for six years to develop the Christmas at the Gate season. The shows are family friendly and designed to be performed at the unique theatre space at The Gate.
The Gate is housed in a 100 year old Grade II listed building. Formally the Plasnewydd Presbyterian Church, it is located in Keppoch Street in the Roath area of Cardiff.
When it was complete, the new arts centre was endorsed by BBC news presenter Huw Edwards, who said of it that it was;
‘…a fantastic example of what can be done with a disused church building – it continues to serve the community, and the conversion is exemplary on every level.’
The Gate opened its doors in September 2004!
Black RAT Productions and The Gate first worked together in 2009 when Miss Julie performed in the old bar area. We are delighted that we have been instrumental in establishing The Gate as a theatre venue with all of our early shows playing there.
The Christmas at the Gate season started life following a discussion with the company and the venue about bringing younger audiences into the theatre and establishing a family Christmas show. Wind in the Willows was our inaugural show and The Gate realised that Black RAT had created something very special. In the last two years we have produced the shows together and thoroughly enjoy our partnership.
Now in its sixth year, the season has grown form strength to strength and is now established as one of Cardiff’s main players in Christmas shows.
From humble beginnings, the shows now play to thousands of children each year.
